Brewster Track Teams Excel at Tri-Valley Meet
Girls place fourth, boys fifth
Daniel Schiff Brewster's Nick Arena placed sixth in the mile at the Red Raider Invitational. BREWSTER - The Brewster High boys and girls track and field teams both turned in solid performances at the Tri-Valley Invitational last weekend in Grahamsville, NY.
Brewster's boys team placed fifth (out of 20 teams). Arlington was first, Pine Bush took second and Hen Hud was third in the team standings.
Adam McIe took a first place in the 2,000 steeplechase, winning in 6:45.2. Mauricio Madureira was second in the high jump with a 5-3 effort, and Nick Arena placed third in the 800 in a time of 2:01.8.
Mike Thomas was third in the javelin with a throw of 142-5, and Thomas was also third in the long jump with a 20-0 leap.
Kamal Johnson placed fourth in the 400 in 55.6, Andrew Sniffen was fifth in the discus with a 124-11 mark, and Brewster's 3x110 hurdle team of Richie Taylor, Anthony Holder and Madureira placed fifth in 58.4.
"It was a good performance," Bears coach Joe Scelia said. "We didn't expect a top-five finish… we kept some guys fresh. Nick and Adam ran great, and Sniffen threw well. It was a good tune-up for the league meet."

Ariana Bottalico took a second in the steeplechase in a time of 8:09.5. Sam Waruch was second in the 400 hurdles in 72.7, Bottalico was third in the 3,000 with a time of 11:11, and Waruch was third in the 800 in 2:35.1.
"A lot of young girls did really well for us," Scelia said. "Ariana did real well, and fourth for the team is very solid for a competitive meet like this."
The Bears were at the Red Raider Invitational last Friday at North Rockland High School.
Arena placed sixth (of 166) in the boys mile in a personal record time of 4:34.0, also a top-10 all-time mark for Brewster High School.
Bottalico was sixth in the girls mile in a time of 5:25.9, a new school record time.
"Both of those performances were incredible," Scelia said. "They showed they are two of the better runners in the state. To medal at that meet is a great honor."
Brewster's boys and girls teams both came up winners in a tri-meet against Fox Lane and Yorktown the prior Wednesday. The boys and girls both stand at 2-0.
"Our teams did great," Scelia said. "Both teams dominated. They're both looking good going into the league meet."
The Bears were scheduled to compete at the Kingston Invitational Saturday, and Brewster is at the League II-A meet on April 27 and 28.
