Know When to Walk Away

A card game turned violent when one of the players allegedly stabbed another man with a broken beer bottle.

Carmel Police were summoned to a residence on Route 6 in the hamlet of Carmel last week at 4 a.m. for a report of a stabbing victim.

Police Chief Michael Johnson said officers found the injured man with a stab wound and summoned EMS personnel. Members of the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported the unidentified victim to Putnam Hospital Center where he underwent surgery.

The chief said the man's assailant, Luis Garcia, 25, of Carmel, also necessitated medical treatment at the hospital. After he was discharged from the Emergency Room, Garcia was arrested by Officer Mike Williams on charges of felony assault.

Garcia was arraigned by Carmel Justice Joseph Spofford and was remanded to the Putnam Correctional Facility without bail pending a court hearing next week.

District Attorney Adam Levy said the charge was a Class C felony carrying a potential 15 year state prison term upon conviction.
