John J. Werner

John J. Werner, age 68, a lifelong resident of Kent, NY, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at his home. Mr. Werner was born June 2, 1940, to Gottfried and Helen (Swartz) Werner. He was born in the Bronx and the family moved to Carmel, NY. when he was four years old. He attended Carmel schools. On October 5, 1958 he joined the U.S. Army at age 18, and his basic training was at Ft. Dix NJ. then onto Ft. Gordon GA. He was then stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, where he was with the Military Police. He met the Love of His Life, Ruth Cornett. He was discharged October 6, 1960 and they were wed December 18, 1960 in Leavenworth, Kansas. Mr. Werner was a Chief Lineman for NY. State Electric Corp. for 41 years before retiring. He was also a member of The Lake Carmel Fire Department for 35 years and was Chief from 1985 to 1987. John was also the Grand Marshall at the Lake Carmel Fire Dept. parade in 2008. Besides his wife Ruth Werner (Cornett), he is survived by four loving children J. Scott of New York, NY., Linda Pagona and her husband Ralph of Mountain Dale NY., Cynthia Johnson and her husband Pat of Hopewell Jct. NY., and Steven and his wife Jen of Hopewell Jct., NY., five grandchildren--Matthew, Emily, Natalie, Josh, and Cody, 2 nephews, a niece, and several cousins. Mr. Werner was pre-deceased by sister Hildegard Rainey and brother Fred Werner. A service was held at the Lake Carmel Fire House on Saturday June 6, 2009. The family has asked that donations in his memory be made to the Lake Carmel Fire House or the American Lung Association. Arrangements were under the direction of Cargain Funeral Homes.
