Cubs Go 2-2 Last Week

16 Blue Squad Tops Kent, Lewisboro, Falls to North Salem, Cortlandt
by Skip Pearlman

CARMEL - The Carmel Cubs 16-year-old Blue baseball team split its four games last week. The Cubs dropped an 8-4 decision to North Salem Sunday, and fell to Cortlandt, 10- 6, Saturday. Carmel posted a 4-1 victory over Lewisboro last Friday, and defeated Kent, 13-1, one day earlier.

The four-game split left the Cubs at 6-2 in WPBA play.

Sunday at North Salem (10-0), Mastri picked up the win on the mound, while Nick Palmiero took the loss for Carmel.

Scott Sheppard went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three stolen bases for the Cubs, Chase Dulitz and Kyle Tanner each had an RBI, Dan Lerner was 2-for-4 with a steal and a run scored, and Rob O'Malley went 2-for-3.

Saturday at Cortlandt (5-2), Kyle Altman got the win for the host, and Ron Stolle took the loss on the hill for the Cubs.

Dulitz drove in two runs and went 2-for-3 with a double, Palmiero and Jim Hanna each had one RBI, and Stolle went 2-for-3.

Last Friday at Carmel High School, the Cubs topped Lewisboro, behind a three-hitter from Lerner, who allowed no earned runs, struck out four and walked four. John O'Connor took the loss.

Ryan Anderes went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a double for Carmel, and Palmiero, O'Malley and Lerner each had one RBI.

Last Thursday at Ryan Field in Lake Carmel, the Cubs drilled Kent, with Palmiero picking up the win, in relief of Anderes, who started. Ray Williams took the loss for the White Sox.

Charlie Mills drove in three runs for Carmel and went 2-for-3 with a double. Ridge Dulitz had two RBI, Sheppard went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a triple, and Palmiero, O'Malley and Hanna each had an RBI. Palmiero and Hanna each finished with three steals, including a steal of home, and Anderes had two steals.

Mike Marianiello had an RBI for Kent, which fell to 0-5.

"The team is off to a great start," Cubs coach Jon Lerner said. "We had a bit of a hiccup over the weekend… we got off to a terrible start in the loss to Cortlandt. We chipped away, but the hole was too deep. And North Salem is also a good team. The win over Lewisboro was a great game. It was 1-1 going into the sixth, and we got one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Lerner (3-0) and Anderes (2-0) have been pitching well for us, Mills has been hot at the bat so far (11 RBI), Anderes is hitting over .400, and Hanna has 10 stolen bases so far."

The Cubs were scheduled to travel to Peckham Field in Patterson for a 3 p.m. game Saturday, and Carmel hosts Peekskill Sunday at 4:30pm at Crane Road.
