Child Acting

If you want your child to have a quality theater experience this fall, consider enrolling him or her in one of The Putnam Children's Discovery Center acting programs! Offerings include a play entitled The Canterbury Tales or... Geoffrey Chaucer's Flying Circus (ages 9-16) and a Sketch Comedy Workshop for high school students. Lecture

At 1pm, The Southeast Museum will host a lecture entitled: The Language of Crisis: Documenting the Great Depression. Michael Jacobs, an instructor of English and Humanities at Berkeley College, will discuss how the Depression era writers combined poetry and prose with journalism to document and represent the social reality of a nation in crisis.

Handle with Care

Pet Program at the Patterson Library at 11am. Kids ages 5 and up will enjoy animal stories and a craft while learning about how to be a responsible pet owner and a friend to all animals. Kids will meet some rescued animals and hear from people who find them homes.

Big Band

Boscobel House & Gardens will celebrate summer’s end in its usual big way: with the annual Big Band Concert and Sunset Picnic. Gates open to picnickers at 5:30pm and the concert will begin at 6pm. Honors

The Community Foundation of Dutchess County 16th Annual Garden Party will be held from 3 to 6pm. This signature tented and catered event is presented to recognize local residents for their community service, while demonstrating the work of the Community Foundation in our area. The 2009 Honorees are Dana and Ira Effron, and Shirley and Bernard Handel. The Garden Party will be hosted by Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson on the Blithewood Lawn of The Levy Economics Institute.

Flower Show

The Brewster-Carmel Garden Club will present a Standard Flower Show called "The Clock is Striking Autumn" at the Tilly Foster Farm, Route 312, Brewster, NY in September. Dates and times for this show are Friday,September 18th from 2pm to 4pm and Saturday, September 19th from 10am to 4pm. Floral designs and horticulture will be featured and the show is open to the public with free admission.

Firearm Safety Course

The “Home Firearm Safety Course” sponsored by the National Rifle Association will be conducted in New Milford on Sunday, September 20, 2009. The four-hour course for safe gun handling is conducted in the classroom only. This is not the Basic Handgun Course to obtain a handgun permit.

Armchair Actors Monthly

The next meeting of The Armchair Actors, Brewster Theater Company’s monthly play reading group, will be Wednesday, Aug 26th at 7pm at the Brewster Public Library on Main Street in Brewster, NY 10509.

This month’s reading will be open to teens (ages 13 and up) as well as adults where they will be reading and sing- ing along to the 1948 musical Kiss Me, Kate.

Impressionist Paintings

If you enjoy paintings of the Impressionist period, then you’ll want to see Susan Shaiken’s exhibit in the Third Floor Gallery at Mahopac Public Library.

A Mahopac resident for many years, Susan practices as a therapist by offering workshops at local nursing homes. Her artwork will remain on view during regular Library hours through August 31 (the Mahopac Public Library is closed on Sundays).
