Carmel Core Returns to the Field
Rams soccer hoping off-season work pays dividends
CARMEL – Coming off a season that was not all they hoped it would be, the Carmel High boys soccer team has reason for optimism. The Rams return eight starters from last season’s team, and believe they have the supporting cast to raise their level of play.

Here’s a look at this fall’s Rams squad. TEAM – Carmel High boys soccer COACH – Mike Gizzo, second season LAST YEAR’S RECORD/FINISH – 6-9, missed playoffs WHAT’S EXCITING ABOUT THIS TEAM? – “I think it’s fantastic that we field a strong starting 11, and we have some strong seniors I’m excited about,” Gizzo said. “They could carry the team, and the rest of the lineup also looks solid. I’m optimistic – they worked hard in the off-season. Guys came in in better shape, and with their heads in soccer. Some of them have been in premiere programs, and that works to our advantage.” RETURNING STARTERS – Mykhaylo Panchishak (12, D, captain), Sean Gavin (12, M), Kyle Cassidy (12, M), Joe Ilardi (12, ST), Anthony D’Arco (11, D), Brandon Devlin (11, M), Matt Doyle (11, D), Steve Mazzoni (12, G) RETURNING PLAYERS – Sebastian Savino (12, D), Flynn O’Shaughnessy (12, M/F), Chris Russo (11, M) NEW PLAYERS – Elias Greco (11, G), Charlie Mills (11, D) LEAGUE – The new league alignment pairs Mahopac, Carmel, Brewster, Lakeland, Yorktown and Panas. “I’m excited about the new league,” Gizzo said. “There are some strong teams. The perception is that we’re getting off easy (being out of the old League 1-C with the Dutchess schools). But Yorktown is strong, and some of the other teams are also good.” OUTLOOK – Gizzo is expecting his veterans to set the tone. “Our leaders have to set the pace,” he said. “Cassidy, at midfield, can control a game. He’ll be instrumental for us. Panchishak will anchor the defense – he’s fast, strong and smart, and Ilardi came in faster and stronger than he was last year. I’m excited to see what he can do. Greco in goal can also have a major impact on the team. He’s a strong keeper. I expect Greco and Mazzoni to be in a dogfight – either of them can start, so we’re in a win-win position. Defensively we’re strong and experienced, at midfield if Cassidy does the job and Devlin produces we can be strong, and at forward… we’re waiting to see what we have. Ilardi has a lot of potential. He could be strong.”
