County to Cut 49 Jobs
County Executive Robert Bondi has proposed eliminating 49 fulltime positions in his $137 million 2009-2010 Budget.
The grim news came Tuesday evening at the Putnam County Courthouse when the executive addressed members of the Putnam Legislature before a SRO audience during his annual budget address. Full Story
Gunman Robs PCSB
The scene resembled a cops and robbers motion picture scene when Brewster State Police and members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department converged on the Putnam County Savings Bank main branch located on Route 6 at Drewville Road in Southeast yesterday (Wednesday) for a reported robbery. Robert Martin, who turns 23 tomorrow (Friday), came home from Iraq last week for a brief visit before heading west to Camp Pendleton in southern California, where he is now stationed.
Martin enlisted in the Marines after graduating from Carmel High School in 2006. Full Story
Polls Open at 6am Tuesday Countywide
Putnam County Elections Commissioners Robert Bennett and Anthony Scannapieco and their staffs didn’t have much of a vacation this summer now that 69 candidates have filed petitions to run for 34 positions in town and county government this fall.
The large number of candidates seeking office will result in a number of primaries next Tuesday. Full Story

Putnam’s eight citizens who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, will be remembered Friday evening when the county’s annual 9-11 memorial service takes place at the Carmel Cornerstone Park. Full Story
Motorcyle-Deer Crash Kills Former Brewster Resident
Family and friends are mourning the passing of Jeffrey Coursen this week.
The 53-year-old former Brewster resident was killed last Friday night when his Suzuki motorcycle struck a deer near his Pawling residence on South Quaker Hill Road at 7:30pm.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene but Coursen, who had been ejected upon impact, was pronounced dead. Full Story
