HOPE Raises Funds for CAP

by Eric Gross

Seventy-one motorcyclists traveled 71 miles Sunday throughout Putnam County to raise money for CAP— Putnam’s Community Action Program.

The 5th annual Motorcycle Ride for Hope—Hunger, Oppression, Poverty, Equality—attracted cyclists of all ages and from all walks of life.

Ann Voss of Patterson, a spry 70, took part in the long ride with her friend Alan Parks of Putnam Lake. Voss, a retired nurse who has experienced a variety of health problems in recent years, and donates her time by volunteering for a number of local organizations, decided to take the plunge because “I was never on a cycle before. Alan encouraged me to join him, so here I am.”

Chris Amundson of Mahopac and John Coles, also of Mahopac, completed the ride. Amundson called it “the right thing to do. CAP assists so many in need. This is our way of giving back.”

CAP Executive Director Judy Callahan thanked the cyclists: “All of the money raised by your generosity will help fund CAP’s programs that assist low income residents of our community.”

Callahan said CAP continues to see clients in “record-breaking numbers. Despite the influx and the downward economy, CAP’s supporters continue to step to the plate, which is very encouraging.”

CAP provides services to more than 400 families each month: “Some months are busier than others. During the winter our soup kitchen experiences a great amount of activity.”

Contributions are always appreciated. Callahan said CAP operates 365 days a year: “Support and contributions are always needed.”

Those interested in becoming involved with CAP or in making a donation are asked to call Callahan at 278- 8021.
