Greeley Burns Brewster on Big Plays
BREWSTER – The Brewster High football team was hoping for a better performance than this, coming off a season-opening win over Beacon. But week two saw the Bears struggle against Greeley in a 33-12 League ANorth game last Thursday in Chappaqua.
Dan Schiff Tyler Hanson led the Bears with 60 yards and a TD at Greeley.
The Quakers (1-1) burned Brewster on big plays with alarming regularity. Greeley scored three times on plays of over 70 yards.
And it started out looking like the Bears could have a good one. Tyler Hanson opened the scoring on a fiveyard run, capping Brewster’s first possession.
But Greeley answered quickly, and often, scoring four unanswered touchdowns.
The Quakers put seven on the board moments after the Hanson score, when Rich Giner busted off a 71-yard TD run. They made it 14-6 in the second on QB Justin Ciero’s 14-yard run. And Ciero connected with Gustavo Laramendi on a 78-yard TD strike before the half to make it a 20-6 advantage.
Dan Schiff Brewster’s Trevor Smith looks for yardage at Greeley last Thursday.
Laramendi broke off another big play in the third, galloping 39 yards for a TD, before Brewster responded with a 72-yard pass from MJ Garrity to Trevor Smith, making the score 26-12.
Ciero capped the scoring in the fourth with a five-yard run.
Bears coach Don Polverari was not amused.
“We were obviously disappointed as a team,” he said. “We thought we matched up well… But defensively we gave up big plays and missed tackles. Offensively, we shot ourselves in the foot… we didn’t finish drives. We’re not the type of team to come out and start throwing it up… we need to keep it close, try to wear you out. Our game plan was good, but we made some mistakes… The kids are extremely upset about the outcome. They take it personal. We’ve got to eliminate the mistakes.”
Garrity finished with 100 yards passing on 4-of-12 accuracy, and had a TD. Hanson finished with 60 yards and a TD on 14 carries, and Trevor Smith added 18 yards on six attempts.
James Schoenig had two sacks for the Bears, and Vin Serrecchia had one.
Things don’t get any easier for Brewster this Friday, when the Bears host Somers (2-0) at 7 p.m. The Tuskers are coming off a 42-0 demolition of Hen Hud.
