Remembering Columbus

Celebrate Exploration, Italian Culture This Weekend
Though Columbus Day is not until October 12, the day will celebrated this Sunday in Mahopac with the annual Putnam County Columbus Day Parade. The holiday has been much maligned in recent years, but instead of focusing on the controversies, this Sunday’s parade and festival should be a time to celebrate both the spirit of exploration as exemplified by Columbus and the contributions made by America’s Italian immigrants.

The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria Felicissimo Giorno di Colombo, of the Italian American Club of Mahopac, aptly describes the reason why we celebrate Columbus Day:

“While we recognize that Columbus was an Italian explorer with an indomitable spirit, who was looking for a shorter route to the trading ports of the East, we are thankful today that, by the Grace of God, he came upon this great continent which hosts our nation. Since then, many more such brave, just, and adventurous men and women have shown us the way to a better life and guided us towards a nation of freedom and liberty without equal in the world. It is to the memory of Columbus and all those who followed his good will that we dedicate these festivities now and in the future.”

Next week’s Courier will feature photos from the festivities. Additionally, look for the Courier’s Jeeps and Cadillac in the Parade. See the schedule of events below.
