Defying Odds, Mahopac Tops Carmel

Skip Pearlman On Saturday, the Mahopac Indians defeated Carmel 34-27 to claim the Bryan Higgins Memorial Trophy (above) in the annual grudge match between the two rivals. Mahopac (1-2) entered the game with little on its resume to suggest there would actually be a battle, having not scored a point in the season’s first two games. Carmel, meanwhile, came in with a 1-1 record, and had played well in a loss to a tough RCK squad in week one. The Rams put 52 points on the board in their first two games, and had beaten Mahopac in 10 of the last 11 meetings. But Mahopac took advantage of good field position and poor Carmel special teams play, and gained momentum and confidence to emerge with the win. See page 11 for story and more photos.
