A Note on Nomenclature: Why Do We Say American Italian?

As our country becomes increasingly polarized, some Americans have recently begun changing the manner in which they refer to their ethnicity in order to promote American unity, without forgetting the USA’s diversity of rich cultures. Instead of calling themselves German Americans or Asian Americans—pitting our proud heritages against each other—some have begun putting the “American” first, as the adjective determines the character of the noun. In an effort to promote unity, THE COURIER will use this nomenclature.
