Bears and Rams Deadlocked at 2
BREWSTER—The Brewster and Carmel High boys soccer teams fought to a 2-2 tie in a League 1-B game played last Thursday night at Carmel High School. Brewster also dropped a 1-0 decision to Lakeland in another overtime game Monday at Lakeland.
SKIP PEARLMAN Brewster’s Jorge Lopez (9) and Carmel’s Steve Mazzoni (18) battle for possession last Thursday at Carmel.
Against Lakeland (6-1-2), Michal Kociuba came through with the gamewinner for the Hornets with 2:00 left in the first overtime period.
Tim Ho had 13 saves for Brewster, while Steven Reiche stopped seven shots on goal for the Hornets.
“We had a few offensive attempts, and both defenses played well,” Brewster coach Scott Potusek said. “Jesus Martinez played well for us, and Bernardo Magalhaes also had a good game. They gave us strong defense in the middle. Our defense, as a whole, played well.”
Carmel’s Joe Ilardi (9) tries to control ball, as Matt Santoriello of Brewster (13) steps in.
Last Thursday at Carmel, the Bears got on the board first, when Jorge Lopez converted off a pass from Ryan Williams.
Carmel scored the next two goals (no Carmel results were reported to The Courier), before Magalhaes scored to tie the game at 2-2.
Two 10-minute overtime sessions did not break the deadlock.
Ho had eight saves for Brewster.
“I thought we played well,” Potusek said. “We came out strong and took advantage of a Carmel being a little slow. . . . But Carmel picked it up in the second half. We stayed with it in overtime, but we didn’t really get any good opportunities in the overtime.”
Brewster was without starting keeper Jason DiNardo, who is out with a broken hand. DiNardo is hoping to return before the end of the season. The Bears were also missing team captain Temo Cazarez, who is out with a calf injury. He’ll miss at least two weeks, according to Potusek.

“That’s a big loss at midfield for us,” Potusek said. “He provides a lot of support on both sides of the ball.”
Brewster was set to host Mahopac Friday at 4:30pm.
