Bears Take It out on Bobcats
Hanson rumbles for 201 yards, two TDs; Smith, Rubino add scores in rout
BREWSTER—Coming off back-toback thumpings by Somers (45-0) and Poughkeepsie (46-0), if Brewster’s Bears had their way, someone was going to pay.
SKIP PEARLMAN Brewster’s Tyler Hanson ran for 201 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Byram Hills Friday.
And on Homecoming night, the Bears got their wish.
For the first time this season, Brewster got its running game going on all cylinders, and pulled away early on the way to a dominating, 41-7 victory Friday night over Byram Hills in a League A-North game at Brewster.
Brewster roasted the Bobcats (1-4, 1-3) in every aspect of the game, and scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters.
Senior running back Tyler Hanson led the ground attack with 201 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Trevor Smith added 48 yards and a TD on seven trips, and Joe Rubino bulled his way to 33 yards and a touchdown on nine attempts.
Bears skipper Don Polverari said his team had little trouble getting up for this one, not after two stomach-churning losses.
“Obviously, coming off two losses like that, no one is happy,” Polverari said. “But it was Homecoming, the kids were excited, and they came out to play.”
Hanson set the tone early, returning the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. He added a three-yard score later in the first, and Brewster led 13-0 after one.
Quarterback MJ Garrity punched in a five-yard TD early in the second, and Rubino’s five-yard score made it a 27-0 lead at halftime.
Smith busted off a TD rumble from 24 yards out in the third, and backup QB Adam Tavollilo scored on a twoyard TD burst to conclude the Brewster onslaught.
“Our running game was working,” Polverari said. “Tyler had a great game, our offensive line was clicking. And we only had a few penalties. We worked on that, and I was pleased with the improvement we showed in that area. I was also pleased with the defense – we tackled well and didn’t give up the big play. Vin Serrecchia had a good game for us with an interception, and Rubino had a great day with seven tackles. Dan Santiago and Steve Greene each had five tackles and had a good game, and our secondary covered well.”
Brewster, now 2-3 overall and 1-3 in league, travels to take on Fox Lane Friday at 7pm. The Foxes (5-0) are coming off a 19-15 win over Greeley.
