Mahopac also notches 3-2 win over Carmel

MAHOPAC—In a game that featured strong defense from both sides, it was Erin Taylor’s goal with 19:03 remaining in the game that gave the Brewster High field hockey team a 1-0 victory over Mahopac in a League 1-B game played Saturday at Mahopac High School.

Brewster also dropped a 5-0 decision to Ossining in another league game last Thursday on the road.

Mahopac also picked up a 3-2 victory over Carmel last Tuesday at Carmel, and the Indians beat Yorktown, 3-2, Thursday at Yorktown.

Carmel closed the week last Friday with a 2-0 loss at Ossining, and also dropped a 5-0 decision a day earlier against Lakeland.

In Brewster’s win over Mahopac, the teams played a scoreless first half, with both teams mounting a few offensive surges. But each time, the defense had an answer.

It was just the second time all season Mahopac (7-4-1, 4-2-1) was shut out, and Indians coach Dona DiMaggio was not pleased with what she felt was a sub-par showing.

“To not be able to score is frustrating,” she said. “We didn’t shoot the alleys, we didn’t have enough give-andgoes… we were flat. We didn’t have it. We didn’t execute on some fundamentals.”

Brewster coach Shannon Riley, whose team has been inconsistent so far, said the Bears have been improving.

“I was pleased,” she said. “We’ve been working on getting used to the pace of turf, and I think they showed improvement. We’ve been practicing on the track, and I think it helped. Michaela Spannaus, Marisa Delzio and Kelly Burns all played well for us. Burns is just up from the JV, and she’s been a great addition on defense. Molly Black and Nicole Diebold both played really well on defense, and kept Mahopac off the board. And Kristen (Cartledge) did an excellent job in goal. She made some tough saves.”

Cartledge came up big with nine saves in goal for Brewster, and Kaitlin McCormack stopped three shots for Mahopac.

Brewster (2-2-4, 2-2-1) didn’t fare as well at Ossining (5-4-1).

Katie Malone had two goals, and Molly Malone added two goals and one assist for the Indians.

Cartledge had 12 saves for the Bears, and Julia Prince had six saves for Ossining.

Both Malone girls are fast, and everywhere.”

Brewster edged Yorktown, 3-2, the prior Tuesday at home.

Spannaus had all three Brewster goals, and got the game-winner with 9:46 remaining in the game. Delzio had an assist in the win, and Cartledge stopped nine shots for the Bears.

In Mahopac’s win over Carmel, Abby Armstrong picked up the game-winning goal with 50 seconds left in the game.

Courtney Stein and Liana Viaggio each had a goal and an assist in the Indians’ win.

Carmel got scores from Sarah Mc- Cormack and Halle Dillman, with Mc- Cormack earning an assist.

With Mahopac leading 2-1, Carmel (4-5-2, 1-4) tied the game on Dillman’s goal, off a pass from Sarah McCormack late in the second half.

“We played very well,” Mahopac coach DiMaggio said. “Abby had an amazing game, and Courtney and Liana both had great games. Carmel had a lot of shots in the second half, and Kristyn Notholt had some nice saves. Our sweeper, Jakki Reger, also had a nice game.”

Rams coach Colette Brenneman had to adjust her lineup due to an injury.

“Considering that, I think the kids played pretty well,” Brenneman said. “Mahopac picked it up after we scored. I thought Lindsay Kirk played well, and Sara Rattigan and Scapoli both had a good game for us.”

Kaitlin McCormack had no saves for Mahopac in the first half, and Notholt had five stops in the second. Sam Scapoli had 10 saves for Carmel.

In Mahopac’s win over Yorktown, Armstrong picked up another gamewinning goal, scoring with 6:39 to play. She finished with two goals. Ashley John also scored for the Indians, and Stein had an assist.

Mahopac posted a 1-0 win over North Salem one day earlier, with Stein scoring the game-winner, assisted by John.

In Carmel’s loss to Lakeland (7- 0-1, 7-0), Lean Goldblatt and Emma Bozak each had two goals for the Hornets, and Shannon Scavelli had one.

Scapoli was called on for 20 saves in the Carmel net, while Lakeland keepers combined on one save in the game.

“We played better than we did against Ossining,” Brenneman said. “We challenged them, but they have a phenomenal team.”

In Friday’s loss to Ossining (6-3), Kate Malone and Abby Selig scored for the Indians.

Scapoli stopped 17 shots on goal for Carmel, while Julie Primps and Grace Lombardi combined on eight saves for Ossining.

“We were flat,” Brenneman said. “We couldn’t get any momentum going. Ossining is a good team, and Kate Malone is a very good player. But as a team we could have done better.”

Carmel was scheduled to travel to Brewster Friday for a 4:15pm game, and the Rams host Brewster Monday at 4:15pm at the George Fisher Middle School.
