DEfENSIVE DRIVING

The Defensive Driving Insurance Reduction Program is a sixhour course consisting of a series of films and discussions about driving attitudes and behaviors. Individuals interested in this program can attend a Defensive Driving Class on Saturday, October 24, from 10am- 4pm at the Mahopac Public Library. The cost is $45 per person, or $35 for seniors 65 and over. Registration is required; register with payment at the Information Desk at the library. Completion of the course results in a ten percent liability insurance discount to the principal operator as well as a maximum of four points off the driver’s violation record. This program is approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles, and is presented by Mahopac resident John Coxen. APPRaISaLS

The Croton River Numismatic Society of Carmel, a coin club, will once agin offer the free appraisal of US and foreign coins, paper money, stamps, medals and tokens to the public on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the Carmel Fire Department Meeting Room from 9-5. The firehouse is located 1/4 mile north of the county courthouse at the intersection of Route 52 and Vink drive in Carmel. This will be our 40th semiannual free appraisal event.

MIZZENTOP

Families wanting to explore an independent school education for their Pre-school through Eighth Grade child are invited to attend an Open House Saturday, October 24 from 9am to noon at Mizzentop Day School in the Village of Pawling. Those visiting the school will be able to tour our facility and meet faculty and parent and student ambassadors. NR A COURSE

On October 24, 2009, the National Rifle Association’s “Personal Protection In The Home” Course will be conducted at Shooters’ Pistol Range in New Milford.

Taught by NRA firearms instructor, Herb Furhman, a retired police officer, this advanced eight-hour course is dedicated to the safe and efficient use of handguns for self-protection and fam- ily, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to selfdefense from a home invasion or other violent attack.

This mystery which takes place in 17th century Peru was written under the pseudonym of Annamaria Alfieri. Putnam County Office for Aging will hold their Annual Harvest Jamboree at the Sheet Metal Workers Hall on Friday, October 30, 2009. BOO HOUSE

The 'Boo House' will be celebrating its 8th year as a Carmel Halloween treat. The free haunted house has become a neighborhood tradition. It started with father and son hiding behind a tree to greet trick or treaters and has grown each year. The house this year is planned to be over 200 feet long from start to finish and is guaranteed to be a fun experience for the whole family. 'The Boo House' is located at 73 Dingley Road in Lake Carmel, off of Towners Road. It is open on Halloween night only and begins at dusk. There is no definite end time so come early.

On Saturday, November 7, Support Connection Breast and Ovarian Cancer Support Services will present a fun, relaxing and informative “Lunch and Learn” workshop for women with cancer: “Guided Imagery for Relaxation and Healing.” The workshop and luncheon will take place from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Coppola’s Restaurant, 825 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603, only 25 minutes from Putnam county. ART DISPLaY

Janet Cassidy grew up in New Jersey and moved to the Hudson Valley twenty years ago, when it still seemed like country. Her recent paintings, a series entitled “The Barns of Putnam County” depict structures that may be familiar to many Putnam residents. Ms. Cassidy’s “Barn” series is currently on display in the Third Floor Gallery at the Mahopac Public Library and can be viewed during regular library hours through October 28. The Barns of Putnam County is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization program. In Putnam County the Decentralization program is administered by the Putnam Arts Council. This exhibit will remain on view at the Mahopac Public Library through October 28. YOUNG ARTISTS

The Mahopac Public Library is pleased to host an exhibit of artwork, created by the second grade students at Lakeview Elementary School, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the publication of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and the 80th birthday of Eric Carle.
