Kent Elementary School children joined more than one million other boys and girls from across the U.S. to participate in the nationwide initiative called “Read for the Record.”

Julie Martin, the parent of a child at the school, brought the project to Putnam County. She explained “in partnership with Jumpstart’s Read for the Record program, children from all corners of the U.S. read Eric Carle’s classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar that celebrated reading and community service.”

School principal Joseph Keenan read the book to classes last week. He called it fantastic that Kent School boys and girls were part of the national movement to break Jumpstart’s own world record for the number of children reading the same book on the same day: “We are raising public awareness while making early education a national priority,” he said.
