Bears Surge as Rams Tire

field hockey team got two goals in the second half Monday to post a 3-1 victory over Carmel in a League 1-B game at the George Fischer Middle School in Carmel. The two teams also fought to a 2-2 tie last Friday at Brewster. The Bears opened the week with a 7-0 loss the prior Tuesday at Lakeland.
Monday at Carmel (4-7-3), Michaela Spannaus had two goals and one assist, and Erin Taylor scored a goal for the Bears.
Kristen Cartledge had five saves for Brewster (5-4-5, 2-3-2), and Sam Scapoli stopped 13 shots on goal for the Rams.
“The girls played hard,” Bears coach Shannon Riley said. “Our passing was much improved from the last game. Erin Taylor and Kelly Power both played very well for us.”

The prior Friday at Brewster, it was the Rams drawing first blood. Claudia Jarzebiak got Carmel going with a goal 2:30 into the game.
Katie O’Connell evened the score, converting off a pass from Jess Griesinger with 19:12 left in the half, and Spannaus made it a 2-1 Bears advantage with 6:13 left, assisted by Taylor.
But Carmel’s Lindsey Kirk evened the score at 2-2 with a goal in the second half.
Cartledge had five saves for Brewster, and Scapoli stopped seven for the Rams.
“I was not happy, and the girls were not happy either – with the tie, or the way we went into the second half,” Riley said. “We lost two of our top three defenders to injuries in the second half, and that affected our team. But O’Connell had a good game, and Taylor was strong.”

The Bears took it on the chin the prior Tuesday at Lakeland (8-0-1).
Bridget McGovern, Megan Bozak and Shannon Scavelli each netted two goals in the Hornets win.
“They just have a very good team,” Riley said. “They have a lot of speed and endurance. Our girls were tired and it showed.”
Brewster was set to host Ossining today (Thursday) at 4:15pm.
