Brewster Girls Soccer Tops Lakeland, Falls to Carmel

BY SKIP PEArLMAN
BREWSTER—The Brewster High girls soccer team handed Lakeland a 3-1 setback in a League 1-B game played last Friday at Brewster. The Bears also dropped a 2-0 decision to Carmel in another league game the prior Wednesday.

Friday against Lakeland (3-10), the Bears got all three goals in the first half.

Anna Spannaus had a goal and an assist, Lauren Noce and Taylor Nilsen each scored, and Megan Yarusso and Katie DiVenuto each had an assist.

Rori Stark made 11 saves for Brewster (6-6-1, 2-4-2), and Jessica Boyle had 19 saves for the Hornets.

“That was probably one of our best games of the year,” Bears coach Eric Buzzetto said. “We had beaten Lakeland earlier, they were just coming off a win over Panas, and we tried to shoot from everywhere. Just attack the goal. It was Senior Night, the girls had pink jerseys on (for breast cancer awareness), so they were pumped. Nilsen controlled the midfield, and Anna Spannaus put constant pressure on up front.”

The prior Wednesday against Carmel (8-2-3), the Rams scored once in each half to get the win.

Shauna Guercio and Kim Broccoli each had a goal for Carmel.

Stark had 18 saves for Brewster, and Alyssa Santullo stopped 10 shots for the Rams.

“Carmel is a tough team,” Buzzetto said. “They have two of the best players in the league in Broccoli and Jenna Gilbert, who is a fantastic player. They passed around us, but we never gave up , and had some opportunities. But we never got into a flow.”

Brewster was set to play at Mahopac last night (Wednesday).
