‘Pac Girls Soccer Shut Out inTwo Losses

BY SKIP PEARLMAN
MAHOPAC—The Mahopac High girls soccer team dropped two games last week, falling 1-0 to Carmel Saturday, after dropping a 1-0 decision to Yorktown on the road the prior Wednesday. Both were League 1-B games.

Saturday against Carmel (6-2-3), Miranda Sanchez scored the game-winning goal for the Rams late in the first half. Jenna Gilbert had an assist on the goal.

Alyssa Santullo had seven saves for Carmel, and Monica D’Ippolito stopped seven shots for Mahopac (5-7-1, 2-4-1).

It was the first time in recent memory that Carmel has swept a season series from Mahopac.

“We played well, and our defense has played well all year – especially Monica,” Mahopac coach Ross Fumusa said. “But our issue right now is finishing… We hit the crossbar a few times, but we couldn’t put it in.”

Three days earlier at Yorktown, it was more of the same.

Katie Johnson scored the winner on a corner for the Cornhuskers with 2:00 to play.

D’Ippolito had eight saves, and Yorktown’s Gabrielle Lawrence had four saves.

“It was the same story,” Fumusa said. “It was an even game, but they got one with 2:00 left…We’ve been in every game, thanks to Monica and our defense, but we need to win a few more… I don’t want an out-bracket game or too tough of a team in the first round (of playoffs). We have three games left, and I’d like to see us get hot at the right time, and roll it over into sectionals.”

Mahopac is at Panas Monday at 6:15pm.
