field hockey team got two goals in the second half Monday to post a 3-1 victory over Carmel in a League 1-B game at the George Fischer Middle School in Carmel. The two teams also fought to a 2-2 tie last Friday at Brewster. The Bears opened the week with a 7-0 loss the prior Tuesday at Lakeland. Full Story

CARMEL—After falling behind 13-0 in the first quarter, the Carmel High football team responded with three touchdowns to post a 21-13 victory over Ramapo in a non-league game played last Friday night on the road. Full Story
Chan Goal Lifts ‘Pac over Yorktown, 4-3
MAHOPAC—Jesse Chan’s goal 6:33 into overtime lifted the Mahopac High boys soccer team to a 4-3 victory over Yorktown in a League 1-B game played last Saturday at Yorktown.
Yorktown led 3-0 in the game, before the Indians (8-2-2, 4-1-1) mounted their comeback. Full Story
Brewster Boys, Girls Race to Titles
BREWSTER—It was a double dip of championship pie for the Brewster High boys and girls cross country teams last week, as both squads picked up League II-A championships at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls last Wednesday.
Brewster’s boys, who totaled 27 points, convincingly pulled away from Yorktown (64) and third-place Carmel (72). Full Story

MAHOPAC—The Mahopac High girls soccer team dropped two games last week, falling 1-0 to Carmel Saturday, after dropping a 1-0 decision to Yorktown on the road the prior Wednesday. Both were League 1-B games.
Saturday against Carmel (6-2-3), Miranda Sanchez scored the game-winning goal for the Rams late in the first half. Jenna Gilbert had an assist on the goal. Full Story

Two Bits for a Shave and a Haircut
I am getting a later start than usual, as it’s now Monday afternoon. But I do have a good excuse: for the first time in 40 years, or so, I went to a local barbershop and got a real haircut. The remnants of my pony tail, which I had hoped would one day grow as long as Willy Nelson’s, ended up in an envelope to bring home and save for posterity. Full Story

BREWSTER—The Brewster High football team managed to keep things close in the first half at Fox Lane last Friday, trailing just 14-7 at the break, but the Foxes took care of business in the second half by scoring three touchdowns to post a 34-21 League A-North victory. Full Story
Devlin Scores Two to Power Rams Past Bears
BREWSTER – Brandon Devlin scored two goals for Carmel last Saturday, and the Rams held on to edge Brewster, 2-1, in a League 1-B soccer game played at Brewster. The Bears also dropped a 1-0 decision to Lakeland in another league game Monday at home.
The two losses left Brewster at 6-5-2 overall, 2-4-2 in league action. Carmel improved to 4-5-2. Full Story

Tigers End a Stellar Week with a Loss
PUTNAM VALLEY—The Putnam Valley High field hockey team beat Yorktown and Walter Panas this past week, but dropped a game to Lakeland on Saturday.
This weekend Putnam Valley hosted the first Cortesi Classic, a tournament held for teammate Kelly Cortesi who passed away in July of 2008. Fox Lane, Lakeland and Walter Panas all competed Full Story

PV Volleyball Struggles in Three Losses
PUTNAM VALLEY—The Putnam Valley High volleyball team dropped its last three games. Monday brought a loss to Ossining, Friday to Pawling and Tuesday to Croton. Despite the sub-par play so far this year there have been some bright spots to the season. Full Story
Brewster Swimmers Top Poughkeepsie
BREWSTER—The Brewster High girls swim team topped Poughkeepsie in a meet last week. The Bears improved to 4-0 with the win.
Brewster’s team of Emily Sakowicz, Erin Markert, KelliAnne Valedon and Laura Safford won the 22 medley relay in a time of 2:17.47.
Ali Polhill was first in the 200 freestyle in 2:04.6, and Sakowicz took third in 2:38. Full Story
Carmel Lanes Host Special Olympics Bowling Tourney
More than 125 athletes converged on the Carmel Bowling Lanes last Saturday when Putnam County hosted the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament.
Many of the physically challenged young men and women never threw a bowling ball before but became quickly involved in the competition thanks to their devoted counselors. Full Story
Brave and Hearty Support Alzheimer’s Research on Stormy Sunday
The weather on Sunday outside was positively frightful, yet 200 brave and hearty souls came to Carmel— in the vicinity of the Office for the Aging—dressed to protect themselves against the elements by participating in Putnam’s 8th annual Memory Walk to benefit the American Alzheimer’s Association.
