Animal Kingdom USA’s Ask Critter Chatter
This adopted cat, Larry. was microchipped by the SPCA as a kitten
Danny from Peekskill asks:
Should I microchip my dog and does it hurt him?
Dear Danny,
Yes you should microchip him and no, it doesn’t hurt him. Microchipping is becoming the absolute best way to have your dog identified. It is an RF (radio frequency) chip about the size of a grain of rice that is implanted usually between the shoulder blades. This is a relatively inexpensive procedure that your local Veterinarian can perform. They simply inject the chip with a special needle and you’re done. A unique number, similar to a social security number, is stored in the chip and it is activated when a special scanner is used to read it. In the event that your loved one is lost, the local police, veterinarians and even some shelters can be equipped with this special scanner and can indentify your dog.
Now this is very important Danny: they can only identify your dog if you
register the chip!
The registration is what returns the owners information to the person scanning the chip.
The sad truth is, so many owners do not take the time to get their chip registered. Without the registration process, the number that is stored in the chip is useless.
