Carmel Rocked by Red Raiders, 8-0
Rams count wins over Mahopac, Mt. Vernon
CARMEL—After spoiling Mahopac’s chance to tie for a league title and ripping Mount Vernon in an out-bracket game, the Carmel High boys soccer team just didn’t have much left in the tank.
Carmel’s Joe Ilardi had two goals in win over Mount Vernon and a goal against Carmel last week.
The result was an embarrassing 8-0 loss to No. 4 Scarsdale in last Friday’s Class A first round playoff game, played at Scarsdale.
The No. 13 Rams managed just two shots on goal in the mis-match, while the host racked up six scores before halftime.
Carmel closed the season at 8-7- 2. Scarsdale improved to 13-3-1, and advanced to Tuesday’s quarterfinals, where the team was to face No. 5 New Rochelle.
“Obviously it was a tough way to end the season,” Rams coach Mike Gizzo said. “Four games in five days, and playing against a strong team… it was just too much soccer for us. On our best day, I think we could have given them a run, but under these circumstances – in the playoffs and on their home field - I don’t think we beat them.”
Carmel reached the quarterfinal game by ripping No. 20 Mount Vernon, 5-1, in an out-bracket game last Thursday at Carmel.
Joe Ilardi had two goals for Carmel, Kyle Cassidy added a goal and two assists, and Brandon Devlin and Steve Sepe each had a goal. Sean Gavin and Mykhaylo Panchishak each had one assist.
Steve Mazzoni stopped six shots in goal for Carmel, and Rai DaSilva stopped 12 shots for the Knights.
The Rams took much pleasure in beating Mahopac the prior Tuesday, since a Mahopac win would have given the Indians a share of the League 1-B title. Carmel used that fact, along with it being Senior Night at Carmel, as motivation.
Ilardi and Devlin each scored in the game, and Gavin came through with the game-winner for the Rams, assisted by Devlin.
“That was a great win for us,” Gizzo said. “We knew they were going for the league, and it was Senior Night... that gave us a lot of motivation, and we played a tremendous game. They put a lot of pressure on us in the second half.”
