Pirates Spoil Season Finale for Brewster
BREWSTER—Two big plays in the first quarter by the Pirates put a damper on the season finale for the Brewster High football team Friday night, as Pearl River rode the early lead to a 16-6 non-playoff victory at Brewster High School.
The Pirates (3-5) broke off a 75-yard run on the first play of the game, and led 13-0 after adding a 30-yard touchdown run in the second.
Brewster (2-6) managed to get Joe Rubino into the end zone on a 19-yard run later in the first half, but the Bears were hampered by the same inconsistencies that have plagued them all season an inability to sustain drives, and a tendency to commit penalties.
Tyler Hanson led Brewster with 154 yards on 28 carries, and quarterback Trevor Smith went 5-for-11 for 30 yards and one pick in the air.
Joe Rubino and Stu Meissner led the Bears with six tackles each, and Steve Greene had five.
“It was kind of a microcosm of our season,” Bears coach Don Polverari said. “We started with the 75-yard run and we’re already behind the eightball. We had some good series, then we made mistakes in the red zone and didn’t finish drives.”
