Carmel High’s Marielle Campbell turned in a strong performance the state meet last week.
Campbell, who earned the No. 3 seed from Section 1, dropped her openinground match Saturday to Quinn Gleason, the No. 6 seed in the state (Section 5), 6-2, 6-3.
That loss took Campbell out of the championship round, and put her in the consolation round.
Campbell settled down and went on to beat Claire Schmitz of Section 2, 8-2, also on Saturday.
On Sunday, Campbell defeated Mane Mehrabyan, of Section 4, 8-2, Claire Minnoe, of Section 3, 8-2, and then topped Samantha Elgort, of Section 11, 8-5, in the consolation final to clinch first place.
Rams coach Mike Coughlin said it was an impressive showing.
“I was amazed at the level of play,” Coughlin said. “Everyone was strong, and Marielle had confidence and poise and played great. She was very emotional at the end, it was an emotional win and she surprised everybody – I think including herself. This exceeded what she thought was possible. She’s really an excellent player. To come back and win four matches against the best in the state… that was excellent.”
