Overnight Parking Now Banned

Mild autumn weather has resulted in many residents of the area forgetting about what lies ahead!

Carmel Police Chief Michael Johnson and Highway Superintendent Michael Simone brought the public back to reality Tuesday by announcing that overnight parking is now prohibited on all town and county roads in the greater Mahopac, Carmel, and Mahopac Falls area through next April 15.

Officials said the parking prohibition is from 6pm to 9am on town roads and from 5pm to 6am on county roads. The chief said certain town roads allow for alternate side of the street parking and those roads are posted.

The parking ban is enacted each fall in order to facilitate town and county highway crews in snow removal. Parking fines have been increased this year from $10 per violation to $25. Vehicles will be ticketed by police and may be towed at the owner’s expense if a parked car impedes the progress of a snow plow.

The chief said members of his department have begun a two-week reminder warning period. “My officers will be issuing warning notices,” he said, “but after the grace period ends, be expected to receive a summons if a vehicle is left on the road overnight.”
