Silver for Seniors Challenge
Dear Editor:
In last week’s edition of the COURIER, Eric Gross wrote a an article about a concerned citizen, Kristin Burke, who, on behalf of Putnam Family and Community Services (PFCS) initiated a community campaign, “Silver for Seniors Challenge.”
Kristin, a Board Member of PFCS, took on the challenge personally, pledging to match every contribution, up to $2,000, any gift made by the community for PFCS Senior Services program, which reaches out to older adults struggling with depression, anxiety, or isolation, by helping them remain independent as they age.
Kristin recognized that the Senior Services program of the PFCS was in immediate need of funds due to a projected deficit of $12,000 by year’s end. More is better, but no contribution is too small. Personally, and by experience, I endorse this endeavor and urge my fellow community members to join this campaign.
I am dismayed by the number of seniors I’ve met in my four years of volunteering
at the Mahopac, Putnam Valley, and Cold Spring Senior Centers, in that many of them depend on the nutritional program as a means of physical well-being. For many, lunch at the centers is their main nutritional sustenance of the day. PFCS also provides additional qualityof life services as noted above.
Our seniors must be provided with every resource available to fill their needs for well-being, life-saving and other essential services. They cannot
be forgotten.
