Bears Hope to Build on Past Season

BREWSTER—The Brewster High field hockey team had an up-and-down season, but played well at times, closing out the fall with a 6-5-6 record.

The Bears advanced to the playoff tournament, where they drew the No. 5 seed. After receiving a first-round bye, Brewster fell to Pleasantville, the No. 4 seed, 2-1, in the quarterfinals.
“I was very pleased with the season,” first-year coach Shannon Riley said. “The girls played hard all the way through. We played well against Carmel on the turf, and had some good games. Going into the sectionals we weren’t playing as well as I had hoped, and the game against Pleasantville was probably not one of out better performances. But overall I think we had a good season.”
Sophomore forward Micheala Spannaus led the Bears in goals with 12, and was named to the All-Elite and All- League teams. Senior goalkeeper Kristen Cartledge also earned All-League honors.

“Michaela had a great season,” Riley said. “She’s a good asset for the team, she played well and communicated with her teammates. She’s got speed and the ability to play against bigger, stronger players. And Cartledge improved consistently, and kept us in a lot of games toward the end.”
Brewster loses four seniors, including three starters, to graduation, so Riley sees good things ahead for next fall.
“We have a lot of juniors and sophomores on the team,” she said. “So along with some strong players from the JV, I see some potential for next year.”
