Smith Basketball Beats Albany in Tyler Tip-Off

Northampton, MA—The Pioneers opened their 2009 season with a 60- 39 defeat of Albany College of Pharmacy in the Tyler Tip-Off game in Ainsworth Gym. First years DEVON QUAtt ROCCHI (Brewster, NY) and Daron Dean (Brush Prairie, WA) each scored twelve points in their collegiate debuts to lead Smith.

Senior Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst, NJ) tallied her first double double of the season as she scored 10 points with 13 rebounds along with making 6 steals. The Pioneers, who led 30-24 at the half, registered another 30 points in the second half and held the visitors to 15 points to take the victory.

Junior guard Kelly VanValkenburgh (Hunter, NY) scored a game and team high 16 points in the loss while sophomore forward Alex Oaks (Oaks Corners, NY) blocked five shots.

The Pioneers will host Westfield State College on Wednesday, November 18, at 7pm in a non-conference contest.
