Bears Struggled with Consistency During 2-6 Season

Brewster was shut out of the playoffs again, and closed out the season with a loss to Pearl River and a final record of 2-6.

“Obviously it was a disappointing season,” Bears coach Don Polverari said. “But we did some good things, and the kids worked hard. The effort was good, they never gave up, and our biggest problem was inconsistency—on both sides of the ball.”

Senior LB/FB and team captain Joe Rubino and senior three-year starter (DT) and captain Dan Santiago were named All-Section Honorable Mention and All-League. Rubino led Brewster in tackles (78), and Santiago led the team with eight sacks.

Tyler Hanson SKIP Hanson SKIP PEARLmAN Senior OG/DT Steve Greene, junior WB/S Trevor Smith, senior LB/G Stu Meissner and senior RB and team captain Tyler Hanson were all named to the All-League squad. Hanson led the team in rushing yards with 800-plus yards, and scored five touchdowns.

The Bears graduate eight starters from defense, and nine from the offensive side.

“It’s important that we get in the weight room and get stronger,” Polverari said. “We need to fill some holes. The off season starts now in the weight room. You can’t wait until summer, it gets you better in any sport, so it’s important. We’ll have some good skills kids coming back, and some new kids coming up, so we’ll see.”
