Historic homes and sites will be open to the public during this 6th annual tour to benefit Partners with PARC. Expect homes and sites featured on the National Historic Register, holiday caroling, discounts at local stores and restaurants, holiday music, visits with Old St. Nick and Much More! Kick off the holiday season in beautiful and historic Cold Spring. Tours from noon—6pm. It’s Currier & Ives meets It’s a Wonderful Life. A benefit for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Advance tickets: $25 adults, $20 seniors; $12 children under 12. RONaLD MCDONaLD BENEfIT

The Ronald McDonald House at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, the home-away-from-home for families of critically ill or traumatically injured children, will host the 3rd Annual Home for the Holidays Extravaganza on Saturday, Dec. 5.

Ronald McDonald and some of the Rockettes will attend this year’s holiday season kick-off event, where a cast of talented local children will perform musical numbers throughout the day to benefit The Ronald Mc- Donald House at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center.

Ronald McDonald will make a special appearance 1pm to 3pm—and the Rockettes will appear 5pm to 7pm. There will be musical numbers by young people from Brewster and surrounding areas throughout the day.

The 3rd Annual Home for the Holidays also will feature themed gift baskets for every occasion, a raffle to win Radio City Christmas Spectacular tickets, a 50/50 raffle and the chance to buy an unstuffed plush animal you can stuff with love and fluff.

ORNaMENT WORkSHOP

On Saturday, December 5th at 4:30pm, the Southeast Museum will hold a Children’s Ornament Making Workshop. There is something very special about a Christmas ornament that has been hand- made by a child. Before the lighting festival on Main Street, children can join us to create a unique holiday ornament. $5 Materials fee donation requested. The Southeast Museum is located at 67 Main Street, in the Village of Brewster, NY. The Museum’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10am – 4pm. RaIL LINE AUTHOR

Trains have always fascinated Joe Schiavone, a retired Carmel Central School District teacher and now author of a set of books featuring the Putnam Division of the New York Central Railway. “More of ‘The Old Put…’ is Schiavone’s newest publication that continues to tell the story of this fascinating rail line, now known at the North County Trail Way or the “bike path.” Joe Schiavone will speak about The Old Put at the Mahopac Public Library on Saturday, December 5, at 2pm; reservations are requested. In addition to his talk, Joe will screen a 16mm color film of the Putnam Division trains taken in the 1940’s and 50’s.

HOLIDaY ON THE LakE

The Hamlet of Carmel Civic Association’s “Holiday on the Lake” committee has announced the date of this year’s festivities, which will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009 (rain date December 6, 2009). The schedule for the day of community activities will include a children’s reading session at the Reed Library; a teen concert at the Drew Methodist Church; food tasting, face painting, caroling and hayrides at Cornerstone Park; a parade through the hamlet; and will culminate with holiday songs and the lighting of 75 trees on the shore of Lake Gleneida. SERVICE Of LESSONS

The annual “Service of Lessons and Carols,” a service of readings, choral anthems, and congregational carols, that culminates in a candle lighting ceremony, will be held at Vassar College in the Vassar Chapel on Sunday, December 6. This popular event, free and open to the public, will begin at 7pm. A free will offering will be taken to support Dutchess Outreach of Poughkeepsie, via the college's "Community Works" campaign (see http://communityworks. vassar.edu/index.html). The doors will open at 6:30pm, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis.

SHERMaN CHURCH CHRISTMaS

The Sherman Church annual Christmas Bazaar will take place Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9am to 3pm in the church Fellowship Hall, 6 Church Road. Fresh arrangements of greens, gift items for children, homemade crafts, baked goods and homemade soup will be featured.

The church will once again sponsor a Community Carol Sing Sunday, Dec. 6, at 5 pm at the Sherman Gazebo. The family event will also include warm beverages and goodies to go with the joyous singing.

The Children’s Christmas Pageant will take place Sunday, Dec. 13, during the 10am service. The choir under the direction of Minister of Music Carolyn Kopsick will present a Christmas Concert for the community that same day at 4pm in the sanctuary. It will combine classical and contemporary selections to provide an opportunity to reflect and rejoice in the beauty of the season.

Christmas Eve services will be at 7:30pm with a Family Christmas Celebration and at 11pm with a service of Lessons and Carols. After each service, worshipers will form a circle outside and light candles to shine in the darkness and sing of the birth of Jesus Christ.

TEa TIME

Yuletide Teas will be held on Wednesdays and Sundays in December. House tour is at 1pm; Tea starts at 2:30pm. The Putnam/Westchester counties Toys for Tots program is now getting under way. www.toysfortots.org. Our headquarters will again be at the Jefferson Valley Mall. The Ovarian Cancer Telephone Group will take place on Wednesday, December 9 at 8 pm.
