‘Welcome to Mahopac’ signs dedicated

Eric Gross A new Welcome to Mahopac sign is unveiled last week on Route 6 at Crane Road in Mahopac by Supervisor Kenneth Schmitt, developer Paul Camarda, Boy Scout Charles Capozza and Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Peter Bardunias. Eric Gross Two new hand-painted Welcome to Mahopac signs have been unveiled at the entrance to the hamlet.

One sign is located on Route 6 at Crane Road near the Carmel-Mahopac border and the second has been installed on Route 6 east of the Baldwin Place- Mahopac line.

The signage is the result of a Mahopac High School senior who is nearing completion of his Eagle Scout requirements.

Charles Capozza, 17, a member of Mahopac Falls Boy Scout Troop 271, decided to create the sign project because of his love for his community: “I have resided in this town for my entire life and each time I passed the old signs along Route 6 I shuddered because they were so decrepit. Carmel Councilman Anthony DeCarlo gave me an idea to replace the signs for my Eagle Scout and I figured why not? My work would be seen by thousands of people driving along Route 6 every day.”

Last week as the signs were unveiled during a dedication ceremony attended by town officials, Boy Scouts and members of the business community, Supervisor Kenneth Schmitt praised the young man for not only installing the signs but also for landscaping in the vicinity of the new signage. He also commended businessman Paul Camarda for donating $3,000 used for supplies and materials as well as the new shrubbery that adorns the site. The supervisor was also complimentary to members of the Mahopac Chamber of Commerce for its efforts and to Chili’s Restaurant in Baldwin Place for sponsoring a fundraising event.
