A Cheery Crowd Parades Down Gleneida
Photo Essay by Eric Gross
With a steady snowfall groups of young people ride atop floats in the parade. The weather outside was positively frightful, with wet snow falling, accompanied by damp, chilly temperatures, yet more than 1,000 hearty souls braved Carmel’s main street for the community’s 15th annual Holiday Festival.
A day-long list of activities on Saturday, featuring a party at Cornerstone Park, readings at the Reed Library, and holiday craft sales at the Drew United Methodist Church and St. James Church, whetted the appetites for those in attendance for the main course—a parade of floats that proceeded along Gleneida Avenue to the Courthouse.
Putnam County Senior Judge John Sweeny, the emcee, congratulated the festival committee, and especially William Shilling, for his efforts that made the event special.
State Senator Vincent Leibell described the scene as a “picture postcard.”
Little pixies peer out from one of the brightly lighted floats.
Up on the rooftop, a jolly fellow emerges to the delight of the crowd.
