Brewster Matmen Win Second Straight Title

Bears crown nine champs; Magalhaes named M.O.W.

BREWSTER—The Brewster High wrestling team got the 2009-2010 season off to a rousing start last weekend, defending its Rye Wrestling Tournament championship by putting nine wrestlers on the podium.

The Bears finished with 326 points, ahead of second-place Scarsdale (185). Mahopac was third with 165 points.

Liam Erickson won a title at 96 pounds. He went 4-0 at the tournament, and beat Justin Jiminez of Irvington in the finals via pin in 3:12. Mike Parisi also took a first place at 103. Parisi had two byes and went 2-0, pinning John Tambunting of Scarsdale in the finals in :53.

At 112 pounds it was Jim Duncan taking first with a 3-0 mark. Duncan topped Gideon Werthmeier of Horace Mann, 9-0, in the finals. Kyle McAlpin won a title at 130, going 4-0 and topping Seth Marcus of Scarsdale, 9-4, in the finals.

Ricardo Lopez brought home the 140-pound title by going 2-0, pinning Alex Kay of Scarsdale in 5:58 in the finals, and Harry Erickson ruled in the 145-pound class, winning all three matches and edging Pat Bruen of Mahopac, 2-1 in the final.

Nick Ghelarducci picked up the hardware at 145 with a 3-0 mark. Erickson beat Tom Viento of Mahopac, 8-6, in the finals.

Bernardo Magalhaes was crowned champ at 171 pounds. He went 3-0 and pinned Oliver Mold of Pawling in 3:58, and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament.

Dan Santiago went 4-0 at 189 and won the class, pinning Andrew Leftkowitz of Greeley in 2:47.

Taking seconds were Jon Peragine, at 125 pounds, Jevon Gooden, at 135, and Mike Liston, at 285.

Evan Kaschura finished with a third at 215.

“The team, as a whole, did a great job,” Bears coach Tom Looby said. “We scored a lot of points, and some good teams were there… Mahopac, Scarsdale. It was a big win for us, so I’m very happy with that. We had a lot of No. 1 seeds, and I was surprised to see nine champs. They guys really stepped up.

“Magalhaes had a great day,” Looby added. “He pinned his way through the tournament, he was the No. 2 seed. All nine guys who won titles had an excellent day. We had 12 in the finals, so that was a great overall job. It was a nice way to start the season.”

Brewster beat John Jay of East Fishkill, 49-19, in a league match the prior Wednesday on the road.

Winning by pin were Parisi, Duncan, Peragine, Lopez and Magalhaes. Liam Erickson, Dan Friedlander, Kamal Johnson, Ghelarducci and Kaschura picked up wins via decision.

The Bears were set to host the Section 1 Duals today (Thursday), with action starting at 4:30 p.m. Quarterfinals are Friday at John Jay CR at 4:30 p.m. Brewster was also scheduled to compete at the John Jay EF dual meet tournament Friday and Saturday.
