Brewster Pins Down Second Place at John Jay Tournament
BREWSTER—The Brewster High wrestling team turned in a strong showing at the John Jay wrestling tournament last weekend, placing second to Fox Lane. John Jay of East Fishkill took third.
Liam Erickson of Brewster won the 96-pound weight-class title, and was also named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Erickson went 6-0 at the tournament, beating Albany’s Sean Berman, 5-4, in the finals. Erickson moves to 14-0 on the season with the victory.
Brewster 135-pounder Ricardo Lopez also brought home a title, winning his class with a 6-0 record. Lopez posted a 5-2 decision over Cisco Reyes of Putnam Valley in the finals, and also stands at 14-0 for the season.
Taking seconds for Brewster were Jim Duncan, at 112, Jon Peragine, at 125, and Nick Ghelarducci, at 160 pounds.
Mike Parisi (103), Dan Santiago (189), Bernardo Magalhaes (171), Nick Grasso ( 140) and Dan Friedlander (119) all took third place.
“I think we did well,” Bears coach Tom Looby said. “Fox Lane is a tough team, they had a lot of champs. I was not really disappointed, they are the defending champs, and one of the top teams in the section. We’re working on improving … getting better with each match. Erickson had a great tournament, he beat a tough kid from Albany in the finals, and Lopez wrestled tough
— he dominated.”
Brewster hosted the first round of the Section 1 Dual Meet Tournament last Thursday, and the Bears posted wins over White Plains (72-3) and Sleepy Hollow (48-22).
Against White Plains, Erickson won by forfeit at 96, Parisi won by tech fall at 103, Friedlander won via tech fall, Peragine, Jevon Gooden, Kamal Johnson, Ghelarducci, Magalhaes and Santiago all won by pin, Mike Liston won by forfeit, and Duncan, Lopez, Erickson and Evan Kaschura all won decisions.
The Bears were set to continue in the Section 1 duals this week.
