Bears Top Lakeland, But Fall to Yorktown
BREWSTER—The Brewster High boys basketball team cruised past Lakeland, 53-28, last Wednesday, before dropping a 52-50 decision Friday at Yorktown, in a pair of League 1-A games.
The Bears also suffered a fourthquarter collapse the prior Tuesday, blowing an 11-point lead in the fourth in a 52-49 loss to Lourdes.
Friday at Yorktown, the Cornhuskers took the lead late in the fourth. Brewster had two chances to tie in the final moments – but couldn’t.
Jack Dignan led the Bears (10-4, 5-2), with 17 points, Sean Trainor added 14 points and eight rebounds and Jordan Cirocco had five rebounds and five assists to go with four points.
Jordan Moody led Yorktown with 24 points and Jacob Mercado added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
“The key was Yorktown’s secondchance baskets,” Bears coach John Martino said. “They had seven in the second half, and they led to eight points. We had a difficult time keeping them off the glass. Our execution against their press was also a problem, and they out-muscled us around the rim. This was one we let get away.”
Two days earlier against Lakeland (5-6), Nick Blumberg had 13 points and three steals to pace Brewster. Mike Blank added nine points and Dignan and Trainor each had eight. Cirocco added four assists, three steals and five points, and Marc Delzio had four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
“It was a nice performance,” Martino said. “Lakeland struggled shooting all game, and we played an aggressive zone. We had a hand in a face constantly.”
The prior Tuesday against Lourdes, Brewster led 45-34 going into the fourth, where the Bears were outscored 18-4 down the stretch.
Brewster went 1-for-14 during that dismal stretch, one Martino would like to forget.
“They switched from a man defense to a 2-3, and we couldn’t score,” Martino said. We had good shots, got inside, we just couldn’t make a shot.”
Cirocco led Brewster with 13 points, Blumberg added eight points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals, Trainor had nine points, Dignan had 11 points and four steals, and Delzio came up with four steals and three assists.
Brewster is at Beacon Friday at 7:15 p.m.
