Lady Indians Fall to Carmel, Yorktown
The Mahopac High School girls basketball team fell to rival Carmel on the road 62-29 on Saturday, after losing at home to Yorktown 60-39 last Tuesday.
Those losses dropped the Indians’ record to 0-12 on the season.
In the loss to Carmel, junior forward Brittany Craig and senior guard Alexa Madden, who are both captains, led the Indians in scoring with six points apiece.
Mahopac coach Jerry Fioretti was not happy about how his team played. There were times when the team did not play as hard as it could. Unfortunately, that is something that sometimes happens to a young team like the Indians, who are going through growing pains this season.
“This game was a step back,” the coach said. “One of the growing pains is staying competitive when you are down. It was sort of a team letdown. You have to learn to play every minute on the court. We have not mastered that yet.”
Unlike the Carmel game, Fioretti was happy with how his team fought in the 60-39 loss to Yorktown earlier in the week.
Junior guard Sam Nardo led the Indians with 12 points. Madden and junior guard Caitlin Hynes each scored nine points. Hynes also led the team in rebounds with ten.
The Indians were down by 15 points at half time but managed to cut the deficit to five points in the third quarter before Yorktown put the game away.
“The effort to get back in the game was there. It was a step forward,” Fioretti said.
He was impressed with Nardo’s play in this game.
“She got aggressive offensively, which we were trying to get her to do,” said Fioretti.
The Indians will play Scarsdale Friday night in the Matshtik Tournament at Mahopac High School. The tournament will continue the next day, when the Indians will play the winner of the game between John Jay-Cross River and Lakeland.
