Lakeland Proves to be Too Much For Bears
BREWSTER—Playing against conference leading Lakeland/Panas the Brewster High hockey team battled back from a 3-0 deficit to pull within one. With the Bears threatening Lakeland responded, scoring seven of the next goals to pull away a 10-4 win. The loss drops the Bears record to 3-13 on the year, and 1-9 in conference play.
The Bears got a pair goals from eighth grader Sean Henderson. Junior Matt Bentson and eighth grader Joe Wegwerth each added a goal and two assists in the loss.
The Bears entered the second period trailing 3-1, and cut into Lakeland's lead when Henderson scored the first of his two goals. That was a close as they would come, Lakeland responded by scoring two straight goals and took a 5-3 lead into the third.
“After cutting it back down to 3-2, they went on the power play on us and made it 4-2. At the beginning of the third period they scored and right after that everything started going downhill,” said coach Tom Andreacchio. “The late second period goal and the early third period goal really deflated us.”
Lakeland blew the game open in the third, scoring early and often, finishing with 10 goals on the night.
“We keep leading back to the same things, some odd man rushes,” said Andreacchio. “It wasn't just the defense, the offense not coming back and back checking, getting caught down low a couple of times. It all adds to just a horrible night.”
Sophomore Heather Daley made the start in net for the Bears, finishing with 18 saves through two periods. Fellow sophomore Shayne Lisa played the third and made five saves.
The Bears next game is Sunday January 31 against conference opponent Kennedy Catholic. The game will start at 8:10 and will be played at the Brewster Ice Arena.
