’Pac Finishes Week Strong after Tough Start

B.J. O’BRIEN

The Mahopac wrestling team capped off a stretch of having three matches in three days with a 45-30 win over Beacon last Thursday.

That followed two losses earlier in the week. The Indians were defeated by host Arlington 41-35 last Wednesday and 36-35 by Yorktown on the road last Tuesday.

The win over Beacon brought Mahopac’s record to 7-6.

Mahopac coach Juan Torres said he was proud of the way his team performed against Beacon considering that they had lost the two matches they had the two days before that.

Torres said his team knew it was important to bounce back and get a win against Beacon. However, they knew it would not be easy.

“We bounced back. We said we have to win against Beacon. They knew Beacon was a tough team. We had a close match with them at the sectional dual championship,” Torres said.

Freshman Zach was pinned at 5:59 at 96 pounds. Sophomore Paul Caruso wrestled at 108 pounds and won by forfeit. Freshman Danny Walsh lost by pin at 1:14 at 112 pounds. Junior Danny Quarto won by pin at 3:26 at 119 pounds. Sophomore Max Bachmeir won by an 8-2 decision at 125 pounds. Senior Justis Flamio won by pin at 1:33 at 130 pounds. Junior Steve Pagliuca won by technical fall 19-4 at 135 pounds. Junior Brian Carson lost a 6-5 decision at 140 pounds. Sophomore Alex Kinkler lost by pin at 1:25 at 145 pounds. Senior Patrick Bruenn won a 5-2 decision at 152 pounds. Sophomore Mike Spinnelli won by a 10-0 decision at 160 pounds. Junior Tom Viento won by pin at 1:54 at 171 pounds. Sophomore Mitch Vallen won by injury default at 189 pounds. The team forfeited at 215 pounds and senior Andrew Scopino lost a 6-4 decision at 285 pounds.

Torres believes that his team performed better in the 41-35 loss to Arlington than it did the day before against Yorktown.

“I think we wrestled better. We were much more aggressive. We were right there with them,” he said.

Torres was impressed with the performance of Quarto, who wrestled at 119 pounds and defeated an Arlington wrestler who had placed in the section in over time.

He did not think that his team came ready to win in the 36-35 loss to Yorktown.

“I think we were a little flat. We had a few guys sick,” Torres said.

He was impressed with the performance of Pagliuca though, who usually wrestles at 125 pounds but moved up to 135 pounds for the match and won.

Torres told his team afterward that they had to turn things around quickly because they had two more matches coming up over the next two days.

“I said that we have got to shake this one off. We have two more days to wrestle,” he said.

The Indians will be participating in the Super 16 Tournament in Yonkers on Saturday.
