Rams Top Beacon, Jay, Place Ninth at Beacon Tournament
CARMEL—The Carmel High wrestling team placed ninth out of 18 teams at the Beacon Tournament last Saturday. John Jay of Cross River was first.
The Rams also picked up dual meet wins over John Jay EF (41-39) and Beacon (51-34) last week, improving to 14-3.
At the Beacon Tournament, Carmel’s Kevin Davidson won the 140-pound weight class, beating Brian Walsh of Watervliet, 2-0, in the finals. Walsh placed sixth at last year’s state championships.
The win lifted Davidson’s season mark to 22-0.
Rob Kirk took a fifth at 125 for Carmel, and Chris Pecora was sixth at 135 pounds.
“It’s a tough tournament,” Rams coach Bill Twardy said. “We went up short-handed, without some of our starters, and we had wrestled a tough match the day before, so we were a little banged up.
“But Kevin wrestled an excellent tournament,” Twardy added. “He had three pins and a decision, and beat a very good kid in the finals. Kirk and Pecora and wrestled well against some tough competition.”
Last Thursday against John Jay (10- 7), Carmel got wins by pin from Nick Rosalino (103), Davidson and Tom Curtis (171). Igor Panchishak got a win by forfeit at 96, Joe Caporale earned a win by decision at 119, James Autieri was a winner by decision at 145, Vince Pecora picked up a major decision at 152, and AJ Alvarez won by forfeit at 215.
Two days earlier against Beacon, Tom Davidson, Caporale, Kirk, Doug Chiapperino, Mike Panchishak and Alvarez all won via pin. Chris Pecora, Kevin Davidson and Rosalino all won by decision.
Carmel is at the Super 16 Tournament Saturday at Yonkers HS.
