Brooklyn dad & daughter lucky to be alive
A father and daughter are lucky to be alive after falling through thin ice on the Muscoot Reservoir in Somers.
Yan Frant, 62, and his 36-year-old daughter Ynessa, both of Brooklyn, were rescued by firefighters and police last Thursday morning after they fell into the frigid waters while ice fishing.
State Police at Somers along with Somers Town Police and members of the Somers FD Rescue Squad, assisted by a paramedic from Putnam County, used ropes to pull the victims to safety.
Authorities said a Mahopac man on his way to work in Westchester saw the two treading water around 7am and called 911.
The rescue was made more difficult since snow was falling at the time and roads were extremely hazardous, with dozens of crashes reported.
The father and daughter were taken to Northern Westchester Hospital Center in Mt. Kisco, where they were treated and released.
Putnam Commissioner of Emergency Services Robert McMahon has cautioned the public to refrain from venturing out onto ice unless they are sure the surface is thick enough to withstand the weight of a person.
“Fluctuating temperatures cause the most concern since the ice might appear to be thick enough but pockets can easily collapse under excessive weight,” he said.
