Carmel Native Pierre Garçon Honors Haiti at AFC Championship
Putnam County native and Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Pierre Garçon had the day of his life Sunday on the gridiron during the AFC championship game against the Jets.
Garçon, who was born at Putnam Hospital Center on August 8, 1986, and attended schools in Carmel before transferring in his freshman year to high school in Lake Worth, Florida, when his parents headed south to be closer to relatives in Haiti, caught 11 passes for 153 yards against “Gang-Green” and scored the winning touchdown as the Colts earned the right to play in the Super Bowl week from Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
Following the game, Garçon raised Haiti’s national flag and received good news from his mother that the 23-year-old athlete’s family survived the devastating quake and were planning to travel to south Florida for family reunion during Super Bowl weekend.
Garçon told a national television audience following the 30-17 victory: “We have to continue bringing awareness because what’s happening in Haiti is very tough. Nobody should go through that, especially people who are already less fortunate.”
