Gaels Continue Strong Run

DAN KRUZE
SOMERS—After their strong showing at the League Meets two weeks ago the Kennedy Catholic track team had another strong showing at the Westchester County Championships on Sunday. The girls finished third in their class and 14th overall, while the boys were fifth in their class and 15th overall.

With schools from several different classes competing medals were awarded for overall finish, and for results amongst schools from their class.

The girls were led by seniors Breeda Mannion and Jessica Kendzor, along with junior Danielle Asaro, and freshman Katherine Kastberg, who teamed up to take second in class C, and fifth overall in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:18.7.

Individually, Kendzor took second overall in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:05. She also finished ninth in the 300 meter sprint, second in the class.

Asaro finished just behind Kendzor in the 300 meter dash, her time of 43.99 put her 12th overall, third in the class. In the 55 meter dash she finished sixth overall, second in the class, with a time of 7.65.

Mannion ran the 1500 meter run in 5:14.40, placing her ninth overall, second in her class.

“Breeda is still coming back, she had

back problem,” said coach Sister Janet Meehan. “This is only her fourth meet, but she took off fifteen seconds having run this event two weeks ago.”

The boys were led by senior Jesse Aprile who finished finished sixth overall in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.80, which placed him third in the class.

Aprile also turned in two strong performances in jumping events, finishing third in the long jump, jumping 20 feet and three inches. His distance of 40 feet, eight inches placed him fifth in the triple jump. Both results were the top in his class.

“It was Jesse Aprile's day, he scored in all three is his events, he scored almost all our points,” said coach Lawrence Elliott. “He's had a very, very good season, he's been the star of the team. He's been very supportive of other kids, he's supporting the young jumpers on the team. It's really nice to see a total person in the sport. I count on a guy like Jesse to run the jumps, I don't even go over by the jumps during the meets now.”

Like Aprile, senior Dylan Shuck had some success in the triple jump, his distance of 38 feet, seven and a half inches placed him 15th overall, and third in his class. He also placed seventh overall, third in his class, in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet and six inches. Schuck took first in his class in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.76.

Senior Eric BiNome finished 30th overall in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:00.80, but it was good enough to win third place in the class. Sophomore Liam Perry took third in the class in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.25.

“The interesting thing is every meet we've gone to this year Liam Perry has got a medal,” said Elliott. “For a sophomore that's a pretty good way to start your career. He's kind of like a secret weapon.”

The Gaels next meet is the Sectional Championship on Sunday February 14 at the Armory.
