Indians Lose One, Tie One on Upstate Trip

The Mahopac High ice hockey team traveled up to the Albany area last weekend and played two out-of-conference games on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The team played to a 3-3 tie with Guilderland Sunday at Union College and lost to Shaker Colonie 4-0 the day before in a game played at Albany Airport.

In Sunday’s game, Guilderland got out to a 1-0 lead with a power play goal with 3:09 left in the first period. Mahopac tied the score 1-1 with a power play goal by junior defenseman Kevin Kennedy a short time later. Junior forward and tri-captain Tyler Gyscek had an assist on the play. Kennedy scored another power play goal a few minutes later to give the Indians a 2-1 lead. Gyscek and junior forward Eddie Dipasquale had assists on the play.

Guilderland scored two goals quickly to start the second period and take a 3-2 few minutes later. That was the last goal that would be scored by either team for the remainder of regulation and over time. Junior forward Dillon Savitzky and Kennedy had assists on the play.

Mahopac goalie and tri-captain Bobby Fatone had 15 saves on 18 shots he faced.

The day before, Shaker Colonie scored two goals in the second and third periods to defeat the Indians 4-0.

Despite the outcome, Mahopac coach Steve Tuite thought his team played pretty well. He said that the two goals his team gave up in the second period occurred due to their mistakes.

“Both goals I thought were mental mistakes. I still thought we played a good second period. I thought overall we competed well against Shaker,” Tuite said, adding that they have played Shaker Colonie a few times in the past and they have all been good games.

Tuite credited Gyseck, Savitzky and Eddie DiPasquale with having good games.

The Indians’ overall record now stands at 6-7-3. Their record in Conference 1 play is 6-3-1.

Mahopac’s next game is Friday night at 7:10 p.m. against Carmel at the Brewster Ice Arena in a conference contest. The Indians then face Pawling at Trinity Pawling on Saturday at 5 p.m. This will also be a conference game.
