Individual Success, Team Struggles for Rams

DAn KrUZE
CARMEL—Despite some strong performances the Carmel High track team came up short at the North County Championships at the Armory on Sunday. The girls finished 7th and the boys finished 8th despite neither of them participating the field events.

Freshman Eric Holt continued his strong season, and finished second in the 1600 meter run with a time of four minutes, and 40.7 seconds. It was the fourth fastest time by a freshman in the country this year.

“You can never say enough about Eric.

was our goal for him to run 4:40, and it's exactly what he ran,” said coach Eric Schwark. “It's an incredible accomplishment, he's obviously one of the top freshman in the country.”

Senior Bj Tully finished 8th with a time of 4:53.80.

“He showed up late to the 600, so he ran the mile, which is something he's normally not comfortable with,” said Schwark. “He won his heat by quite a distance, he looked really strong. I think he enjoyed the mile more than he thought he would have.”

Senior Dan Foley ran in second most of the way but finished third in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:41.20 seconds. Freshman Dylan Meehan finished 14th with a time 3:09.7.

The 4x200 relay team of Foley, Tully, and sophomores Frank Calandra and Grant Spaeth finished fifth with a time of 1:46.01. Tully and Foley also ran the 4x800 with Holt and junior Danny Malinowski, and finished sixth with a time 9:01.20.

Individually the girls were led by sophomore Sophie Maher who finished first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:48.10

“Sophie had an absolutely ridiculous race, she took command at the 400 meter mark and didn't look back. She kept getting stronger and stronger, she was looking to have a statement race,” said Schwark. “She was hurt all cross country and had gotten pretty down on herself. This race meant a lot to me and to her.”

Senior Bridget Comiskey finished third in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:46.70.

“She ran a fantastic race,” said Schwark. “She stepped up and ran a great race, the whole way she was within striking distance of the lead.”

Junior Jenna Holt and sophomore Shannon McSherry finished fourth and fifth in the 1000 meter run. Holt's time of 3:11.30 put her just ahead of McSherry who finished in 3:13.00.

“It's not an event Jenna is totally comfortable with,” said Schwark. “But she went out and ran real hard, and helped pull Shannon through to a fast time. It was a ten second personal record for Shannon, it was really exciting to see her have such a strong race.”

Holt and McSherry were joined by Maher and sophomore Annie Gould in the 4x800 relay and took second with a time of 10:07.90

The Rams next meet is Monday February 8th at the Armory.
