MAHOPAC—The Mahopac High wrestling team was feeling pretty good last weekend. That is what winning the Super 16 Tournament, which took place Saturday at Yonkers High School, will do for you.

The team won with a total score of 202.5 points in a tournament that includes 16 teams from the area. Many of them are powerhouses when it comes to wrestling.
Carmel came in second with 172 points, and Somers was third.
The Indians were bolstered by three wrestlers who came in first place in their weight classes. Senior Justis Flamio won his fourth Super 16 title, prevailing at 125 pounds, while junior Brian Carson finished at the top of the 135-pound class. Junior Andrew Scopino took first in the 285-pound class.
Freshman Zach Boker came in third at 96 pounds, and sophomore Paul Caruso finished fourth at 103. Freshman Danny Walsh came in sixth place at 112. Junior Steve Pagliuca finished in third place at 130, and senior Patrick Bruenn came in second place at 145. Sophomore Mike Spinelli wrestled at 152 pounds and came in second place, and junior Tom Viento came in third at 171 pounds.
Mahopac coach Juan Torres was very happy with how his team performed. Even though nobody else expected the Indians to win, their coaches were not surprised.
“We kind of thought we could win it. We told the guys that, too,” he said. “It was a good ride home. It is a great accomplishment for us and a confidence booster.”
Mahopac’s next competition will be at the divisionals, which will take place Feb. 6
