Carmel Makes It Three Straight over Brewster

Rams also lose to Lakeland; Bears top Mahopac

CARMEL—The Carmel High girls basketball team ripped Panas, 67- 37, Monday at Carmel High, and the Rams also topped Brewster, 54-52, last Wednesday to sweep the season series from the Bears.

Brewster also dominated Mahopac, 72-26, Friday, and opened the week with a 54-23 win over Panas.

Carmel clinched at least a tie for the League 1-B title. The Rams were tied with Lakeland as of press time. A Brewster win over Lakeland (Tuesday) would have given Carmel the title. A Lakeland win leaves the Hornets and Rams sharing the title.

Monday against Panas (8-10), Brittany Horne was her dominant self, with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Marie Mullen and Kim Broccoli each added 13 points.

Melissa Danko led the Panthers with 13 points.

The game was close at halftime, until Carmel picked it up in the second half. The Rams out-scored Panas 40-15 in the second half.

Carmel improved to 14-4 overall, and 9-1 in league play.

Last Friday at Lakeland (16-1), Horne and Mullen both had 11 points in the loss.

Tori Jarosz led Lakeland with 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Kristin Pappalardo added 16.

“We shot very poorly,” Carmel coach Dan O’Hare said. “And we only made 2-of-5 free throws. We shot under 30 percent. We had good looks, we just didn’t hit shots. We got it to five with under 4:00 to play, but couldn’t seal the deal.”

Two days earlier at Carmel, the Rams led Brewster 18-13 after one quarter, and led 28-26 at halftime.

But it was Mullen’s two free throws with 28 seconds that gave Carmel the winning margin. Those two points gave the Rams a 54-50 lead, before Brewster hit one more shot.

“We had a chance to tie it with a shot in the final seconds, but it didn’t go,” Bears coach Doris Schukin said. “I thought we played a great game, but we were playing catch-up for most of the game. Near the end we had a key turnover and a miss… we definitely wanted to beat them. The first two games they won by 10 or 12, in this one we just fell short.”

Emily Tapio led Brewster (13-4) with 24 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Lauren Quattrocchi added 12 points.

Horne’s 20 points, 18 rebounds and four steals led the Rams. Mulled added 14 points and grabbed four steals, and Broccoli had 12 points.

“We played with great energy,” O’Hare said. “The teams are almost mirror images… it was a good game by our girls. We changed up our defense a bit, and that helped.”

In Brewster’s win over Mahopac (0- 17), Tapio led the way with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, Marisa Delzio added 21 points, Quattrocchi had 11 and Vania Simpri had 10 points and six rebounds.

Brittany Craig’s 11 points led the Indians.

In Brewster’s win over Panas the prior Monday, Tapio had 26 and Quattrocchi had 14

Both Carmel and Brewster are expected to open the playoffs with home games Friday night. Times and opponents are TBA.
