( SKIP PEARLMAN The Mahopac High hockey team split two tough games last week, losing 5-0 to Pawling at Pawling Trinity on Saturday after defeating Carmel 5-1 at the Brewster Ice Arena on Friday night.

Both contests were Conference 1 games.

In the Pawling game, the opponent scored all of their goals in the first two periods, making it tough for the Indians to mount any kind of comeback.

Mahopac coach Steve Tuite said that Pawling was the better team that day.

“I thought we were outplayed. They come out hard from the start,” he said.

Despite being down by such a large deficit, the Indians showed heart and did not give up, playing their best late in the game.

“I thought we played better in the third period than we did in the first two periods,” said Tuite.

He gave way to sophomore backup goalie Anthony Barletta, who Tuite credited with playing a solid 29 minutes in goal and stopping nine of the 11 shots he faced.

In the win over Carmel on Friday, neither team scored in the first period.

However, Mahopac would have an offensive explosion in the second period that would put the game out of reach for the visiting Rams.

The Indians’ junior forward and tricaptain Tyle Gyscek started the scoring with a goal on which junior forward Dillon Savitzky and forward/defenseman Mike Gilmore were credited with assists.

That was followed by a goal by Savitzky on a power play. Gyscek and junior defenseman Kevin Kennedy had assists on the play.

Gyscek scored on another goal later in the period that was set up by Savitzky and Gilmore, who would go on to score the final goal of the period. Gyscek and Savitzky were credited with assists on the play.

Carmel scored its only goal in the third quarter. However, the Indians’ Gilmore later responded with an unassisted goal.

Tuite was very satisfied with how his team played against their big rivals.

“It is a rivalry game. It is always a tough battle with them,” he said.

The offense his team displayed in the second period was something that Tuite was very happy to see. He said that in the past his team has gotten big leads but let them slip away a little bit. That did not happen this time.

“It was good to see things get rolling there. Sometimes we let up a little but we were able to continue and score a couple of goals. It was a total team effort,” Tuite said.
