The Drive to Succeed
A.N.J. Car and Limo Service
MICHAEL BRENDAN DOUGHERTY
John Lofaro’s story is similar to those of many business owners in Putnam County. He worked hard as a limo driver and chauffeur for over a decade, but in early 2007, he finally decided that he’d rather be working for himself. Two years ago this month, he launched A.N.J. Car and Limo service.
“I was putting a lot of hours in to begin with,” said Lofaro, “and obviously in this business the hours are crazy to begin with.”
Lofaro brought 15 years of experience as a driver to his budding fleet of cars. His business features Lincoln Town Cars, and Chevy Suburbans, but if you need a 14 or 16–passenger limo, or even a limo bus, A.N.J. can supply that, as well.
Lofaro said that more than 90 percent of his business involves taking people to airports. “People want to get away for a week, but they can’t arrange for parking, and they want to make sure they arrive on time,” said Lofaro, and that’s where A.N.J. comes in.
But the car and limo business is very competitive. How does Lofaro stay ahead? “My business is networking,” he said, adding, “that’s the biggest help to me. I go networking at business functions, with the Mahopac Chamber, with other corporate clients. I don’t even have a website.”
Networking is one way to quickly build a reputation; the other is good service, according to Lofaro. He credits his early success in a tough economy to a fanatical attention to detail and professionalism.
“I base my business on perfection,” said Lofaro. “I don’t ask for directions. Our drivers come in a suit and tie; they’re personable, clean cut, and professional.” Lofaro heeds the maxim that personnel is policy, and is scrupulous about selecting the best drivers for his clients.
Last year Lofaro had to work an awards show, which involved not only picking up entertainers at an airport, but also escorting them to the show and the various after-parties.
Lofaro does airport runs, proms, weddings, or just about anything you ask. “If there is a car involved, we can do it,” Lofaro said.
“It’s not a glorious business,” Lofaro admitted. “It’s a lot of driving. But someone has to do it the right way.”
A.N.J. Car and Limo Service is based in Mahopac. Cars are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, by appointment only. Tel.: 845-519-6003.
