Last week’s winter blast closed schools, cancelled meetings and community events, snarled roads, and resulted in numerous vehicle mishaps.

Yet the calendar now reads the first week of March, which means that spring will be here sooner than you think!

The Putnam County Soil and Water Conservation District has kicked off its Plant Putnam 2010 seedling sale. Coordinator Lauri Taylor told the Courier that a variety of trees and shrubs to assist landowners in providing food and shelter for wildlife, groundcover, erosion control, and natural native beautification will soon be available.

“Every year we attempt to offer a new variety or two. The old stand-bys will be available but in 2010, ferns, blueberries, and raspberries will be sold as well joining an inventory of low cost transplants consisting of Eastern White Pine, White Spruce, and Colorado blue spruce,” she said.

Other favorite seedlings and shrubs will also be available including American Beech, American Cranberry, American Mountain Ash, American Plum, Northern Bayberry, Pagoda Dogwood, Silky Dogwood, Weigelia, and Swamp Rose Mallow.

“Tried and true Myrtle and Pachysandra are also available this season as well as Trumpet Vine, Sedum, and Daylilies,” said Taylor.

Interested customers must place orders no later than March 31. Order forms are available at putnamcountyny.com or by calling Taylor’s office in Patterson at 878-7918.
